Two Renoir Paintings Stolen in France: Four Works Taken From Renoir Museum

Two paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir remain missing after four of his works were stolen from the Musée Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, on September 8, 2026. The stolen works included Portrait of Madame Stephen Pichon, Young Woman at the Well, Coco Reading and Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano. Two paintings were abandoned during the thieves’ escape, while Young Woman at the Well and Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano remain missing.

Four Renoir Paintings Were Stolen

The theft took place early on the morning of September 8 at the Musée Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera.

According to France’s Ministry of Culture, two individuals broke into the municipal museum at 5:48 a.m. Four paintings by Renoir were taken from the museum’s Gangnat Bedroom, where they had been displayed.

The stolen works were:

• Portrait of Madame Stephen Pichon
• Young Woman at the Well
• Coco Reading
• Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano

The museum’s alarm was activated at 5:48 a.m. Municipal police arrived at approximately 5:53 a.m.

During their escape, the thieves abandoned two of the paintings near the museum. Portrait of Madame Stephen Pichon and Coco Reading were subsequently recovered.

The two other paintings remain missing.

The French authorities have opened an investigation, which has been entrusted to the national police unit responsible for organized and specialized crime.

Which Two Paintings Are Still Missing?

The two works still being searched for are Young Woman at the Well and Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano.

Both paintings had been deposited at the Musée Renoir by the Musée d’Orsay since 1995.

Their disappearance is particularly significant because the Musée Renoir is not an ordinary exhibition space. The museum occupies the former home of Renoir at the Domaine des Collettes in Cagnes-sur-Mer.

Renoir established his home at the Domaine des Collettes in 1907. He lived there during the final period of his life, and the property is closely associated with his later artistic career.

The French Ministry of Culture describes the Cagnes-sur-Mer period as the artist’s final period, marked by an explosion of colour in his paintings and an increasing interest in sculpture.

The Museum Is Renoir’s Former Home

The setting of the theft gives the story an important historical dimension.

Renoir moved to the Côte d’Azur at the beginning of the twentieth century and built his villa at the Domaine des Collettes in 1907.

The property included an extensive olive grove, which Renoir purchased partly to prevent it from being destroyed.

The family moved into the house in 1908.

Today, the Domaine des Collettes remains closely connected with Renoir’s final years. The property includes the house, gardens and studio associated with the artist.

The museum also preserves furniture, personal objects, photographs and artworks connected with Renoir and his circle.

The Domaine des Collettes was classified as a historic monument in 2001.

One of the Missing Paintings Has a Complex History

Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano has particular historical significance because of its provenance.

The French Ministry of Culture explains that three of the four paintings stolen during the burglary were classified as MNR — Musées Nationaux Récupération works.

The MNR category was established after the Second World War for cultural objects recovered in France whose owners could not be identified or whose ownership history required further investigation.

The French state holds these works provisionally while research into their provenance continues.

The status is important because it reflects the complicated history of artworks that circulated during and after the Second World War.

The theft therefore affects works that are not only connected to Renoir’s artistic legacy but also to the broader history of cultural-property recovery in France.

Why the Two Recovered Paintings Matter

The rapid police response appears to have prevented all four works from leaving the area.

The alarm sounded at 5:48 a.m., and municipal police arrived five minutes later.

The two paintings that were abandoned were found near the museum.

The incident demonstrates how important rapid detection and response can be in protecting museum collections.

The thieves were able to enter the building and remove four works, but they apparently did not have enough time to escape with all of them.

The two remaining paintings, however, were taken far enough away that they have not yet been recovered.

The Theft Raises Questions About Museum Security

France’s Ministry of Culture has already identified museum security as a major concern.

In July 2026, the ministry announced a museum security action plan supported by a €30 million security fund. According to the ministry, the program has already supported 482 priority security projects across France.

The ministry said the plan was intended to strengthen security measures in museums and cultural institutions and to improve the role of its security and audit services.

The Renoir theft occurred only weeks after that security initiative was announced.

It therefore adds another high-profile case to the ongoing discussion about the protection of France’s cultural heritage.

Why Stolen Renoirs Are Difficult to Sell

The financial value of famous paintings can make them attractive targets, but their fame also creates a major problem for anyone trying to sell them illegally.

The two missing Renoirs have already been publicly identified.

Their images and details can be circulated among museums, dealers, auction houses, collectors and law-enforcement agencies.

A legitimate buyer would also face serious questions about provenance and ownership.

That means a stolen masterpiece does not function like ordinary stolen property.

Its public identity follows it.

The more famous the artwork, the harder it becomes to introduce it into the legitimate art market without attracting attention.

This is one reason why the recovery of stolen art can sometimes take years. Paintings may disappear from public view without necessarily disappearing physically.

Renoir’s Connection to Cagnes-sur-Mer

The theft has particular resonance because of Renoir’s personal connection with Cagnes-sur-Mer.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in 1841 and died in 1919.

He began spending time on the Côte d’Azur in the early twentieth century and eventually established the Domaine des Collettes as his home.

The French Ministry of Culture notes that Renoir received numerous artists and cultural figures there, including Henri Matisse, Aristide Maillol, Amedeo Modigliani, Auguste Rodin and Claude Monet.

The house became part of the final chapter of his life and work.

The museum therefore preserves more than paintings.

It preserves the physical environment associated with Renoir’s later years.

The Investigation Continues

The investigation into the theft remains ongoing.

Authorities are searching for the two missing works:

Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano

and

Young Woman at the Well.

The two recovered paintings have been returned following the burglary.

The Musée Renoir has become the latest French cultural institution to face questions about the protection of valuable artworks.

For the moment, however, the central issue remains straightforward: two Renoir paintings have disappeared from the museum where they had been displayed, and authorities are trying to recover them.

A Significant Loss for the Museum

The Musée Renoir is a particularly important location for understanding the artist’s final years.

Its collection, historic setting and connection with the Domaine des Collettes make it different from a conventional gallery.

The disappearance of two paintings from this environment is therefore not simply a loss of individual artworks.

It removes two original works from public view and adds another chapter to the complicated history of protecting cultural heritage.

For now, Young Woman at the Well and Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano remain missing.

The investigation continues, and French authorities are searching for the paintings and those responsible for the theft.
